For changing from one hive type to another make a board to fit the biggest unit, cut a hole in it to match the internal dimensions of the smaller one and put them in the order you want.
Say you are moving from National to Langstroth, the adaptor board made from the cheapest sheet material you can obtain, say plywood, fits the Langstroth but you cut the hole to suit the National.
Put the one you want the bees to leave on the bottom and the queen will soon be upstairs laying and then an excluder can be fitted. Three weeks later then the colony will be well established in the upper box and all can be sorted out from there with the correct floor and so on.
Queens love to climb and this is a very useful trait for us to remember and use to our ends. 😉
